Doc Rivers Wins Coach of the Year

Doc Rivers won coach of the year in 2000, taking a scrappy group of Orlando Magic players who are expected to win 29 games or something to 41 wins. Anytime somebody gets injured and he misses half the season and the team still does really well, the coach can get a ton of that credit. If you outperform your expectations, you'll usually be in the conversation but that doesn't automatically translate to an elite situation.
