"You have to know how to report obviously what happened. And then exactly like you said, you need those narrative tenses in order for people to understand what happened," he says. "Once you've painted the picture with the narrative tenses, you want to add something." He adds that when we use the direct speech, it brings us closer to what was actually happening at that point in time.
