Do Authoritarian Governments Really Give Up Power?

There are a surprisingly large number of cases where authoritarian governments just kind of voluntarily give up power. You see this in places like Chile, Pinochet had this vote of whether or not he should continue ruling. Gorbachev relaxed the rules in the former Soviet Union and it ultimately led to a demise of the regime. The really interesting one now is Iran. It's been more than two months since Masa Amini was killed and these protests started.
