By breaking things down into pieces, they are able to understand the learning process and what goes wrong when people make mistakes. They also measure reaction times in fractions of a second which is very good at predicting how long someone will take to do something. It's been incredibly successful this is the great unknown the great hidden success of science according to Professor David Perry.
