In the pursuit of developing systems that understand quote unquote language, proxy metrics we used to assess that kind of became the goal themselves. And it was all about getting state of the art on a particular benchmark, as opposed to developing a system that really understands language. That makes sense to me. I still remember this fairly provocatively titled essay from a few years ago. It was called natural language processing is chasing the wrong goal. and feels like it expressed some of the shift that you're speaking to.
