Self promotion is a part of the process, rather than something that comes afterwards. People really want to engage in communities and real relationships instead of engaged with very polished media celebrities. You don't have to aim to market yourself in public; you can also aim to mark yourself internally at work. Being top of mine is definitely successful personal marketing.
