The Leakiness of Tight Junctions

Tight junctions have both pores and leaks that are more microscopic. With the pores, individual particles of sand can get it between the teeth of a really coarse toothed zipper. Really small molecules like single ions can get through the pores formed by these clawed in teeth of a tight junction. Tight junctions allow for more por primability, and some allow for less. And some are really cation selective, and some are anion selective. If you don't have claudin 16, because of a genetic mutation, you make tight junctions that don't allow for normal magnesium reabsorption. As a result, magnesium remains in the tubule and gets wasted into the ur
