Labor lost votes from those living outside of cities, also in coal mining communities and certain ethnic communities. The political right has benefited hugely by frightening these voters at election time. These low information, or low engagement voters, as the political scientists call them, are essentially the same cohort of people who swung to donald trump in the united states and to boris johnson in britain.
