In the UK, you start doing research and you're expected to know what you're doing. The amount of time we take being a postdoctoral scholar is an issue that is weird. There's zero sense in which the Higgs field is somehow necessary for the idea of mass to exist. Protons and neutrons get most of their mass from quantum chromodynamics - nothing to do with the Higgs Field at all.
