History and the Empiricist
There is no way of being able to check whether or not the person who is writing historical documents actually witnessed the so-called event that they witnessed. So we rely upon documents that purport to be relying upon documents that have long since been lost. The empiricist has a real problem on their hands because they are only concerned about cases for knowledge where you can terminate in an actual observation. But if you don't even in principle have access to the observation, all you have to rely upon is a historic document testifying that someone might have made the observation.
