In modern italian, the third person can be used as the polite form of you. It still makes me think there's something very self conscious about caesar. The word i caesar can only come from him. I imagined that it would be that he didn't want people impersonating him. That seems a lot more plausible a reason for him to do it. But look, the jury's still out, though.
