In modern italian, the third person can be used as the polite form of you. It still makes me think there's something very self conscious about caesar. The word i caesar can only come from him. I imagined that it would be that he didn't want people impersonating him. That seems a lot more plausible a reason for him to do it. But look, the jury's still out, though. Anybody's view could be as valid as as any of the scholars who have thought about this for hundreds of years. There's an entire podcast series in the works. So go to kickstate dot com, search for it and give it your backing.
