Myth of the Month 18: Robin Hood -- pt. 1: The Master of the Forest

Historiansplaining: A historian tells you why everything you know is wrong

CHAPTER

The Yeoman Forester in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales

A yeoman forester had to be a master of archery and of hunting. He could hunt game himself to bring to his patron, or he could oversee hunts for his lord. And you can see a striking similarity between the character of the yeoman that is described in chaucer's canterbury tales and robin hood and his men. In fact, the descriptions are often so close that printers who published the early stories of robin hood in the 15 hundreds recognized the similarity and often re used illustrations depicting the forester as images of robin Hood.
