The Early History of Rome
Rome was a city of hills, and the Tiber's tendency to catastrophically spill its banks. The low-lying floodplain between the capital line and the Palatine would have been under several meters of water for weeks or even months at a time. Recordings in historical times indicate that the Tiber could rise as much as 10 meters above sea level - more than 33 feet. Building the city of Rome meant dealing in a variety of ways with these issues.
