The Origins of Marriage in Ancient Greece

The concept of love and marriage is largely absent in the literature of the Classical period. Wealth and status, rather than emotional attachment, were principal criteria for choosing a wife. The higher one was on the social ladder, it was more likely that their marriages were arranged. While love did not exist among the upper classes, those lower down the scale might have found it more feasible.
