The economy was actually in much better shape back then. Back in 19 80, america still ran annual trade surpluses. Today we are running record annual trade deficits. The national debt was under one trillion now it's over 30 trillion. Almost all debt was financed with 20, 30 year treasuries. Now it's financed with 90 day t bills. We are far more leveraged and far more vulnerable to rising interest rates now than we were then.
