There is an ongoing misconception that most hunter-gatherers did not see past their 35th birthday. The reason for the very low average life expectancy is actually quite tragic. It's because hunter-gatherer groups have high levels of infant mortality, which means it's relatively common that newborns don't survive into adulthood. Infant mortality is 20 to 40% amongst hunter-gather populations compared to just 1% in the UK and USA today.
