People will believe something outrageous if it supports how they already feel about something and people did not like LBJ very much. Daniel Ellsberg would go on to expose one of the greatest real conspiracies of the 20th century. This whole era of conspiracy theories culminated with a government investigation in the mid-1970s that tried to get to the bottom of a lot of questions. It's just as true in the 20s or today as it is in the 70s.
