In "Escape from Evil," Becker explores the existence of human evil. He asks how a god that he doesn't believe in would ever allow this kind of stuff to go on, but yet remains fascinated by it. The answer is connected to our denial of death; we retreat purely into the symbolic side of our existence. If your adversary wins the argument about truth, you die: Your immortality has been shown to be fallible.
