Ford was founded in 1903. In 1907, Ford hired a man named Hawkins to run the company's cost accounting system. He installed an onerous record-keeping system for parts such as pistons that would hold up car production if they were lost or broken. The process meant delay from one operation to another and when a motor assembler couldn't get pistons, all car production was held up.
