The No Soul Conception Debate
The debate largely proceeds in commentary on the verses that i read to you at the beginning of this episode. In exodus 21 22, if men strive together and hurt a woman with child so that her fruit depart, and yet no harm follow, she shall be surely fined according as the woman's husband shall lay upon him. But if any harm follow, thou shalt give life for life. So these two verses define two different legal eventualities, two different possible outcomes. The augustine and thomas aquinas and early christians and the mediaeval christians were arguing over whether or not there is a distinction between when it has a soul and when it doesn't.
