The Spanish Civil War was precipitated by a failed coup in July 1936. The objective of the coup was to quickly overthrow the government, not get embroiled in a military conflict which would last for years. In retrospect, the first 48 hours of the coup would be two of the most important days of the civil war because it would decide who would control several areas of Spain. Today we will discuss these early moments of the coup and why the generals both fail and succeed during them.
