The Mask of Exile
Dalai Lama: We are the only corner of creation that can refuse to be ourselves. As human beings we have this extraordinary ability notOnly not to be ourselves but to pretend to be someone else and to hang a mask in front of our real identity. Once you turn your face towards the phenomenology of loss, then other people are not at all possible as companions or friends. And these things are actually speaking back to us in its own voice - everything is a form of revelation. It's quite merciful actually to think that you can look at yourself and others and have a sense of compassion about the way that reality is very fierce and very difficult.
