Martin luther's father, hans, was a devout roman catholic. He despised the corruption and immorality that he observed in some of the clergy. Hans wanted his son to become a rich lawyer, perhaps for a duke. So luther had thrown himself into his studies,. what if, by becoming a lawyer, he could find a way to defend himself against god's wrath hanging over him? Perhaps as a jurist, he could become just and find peace with the judge of all. But sitting here on his 30 seventh birthday, luther reflected that none of it had worked.
