What is Spiritual Bypassing? (#156)

You Have Permission

CHAPTER

Meditation

A lot of christian prayer practices are more open to spiritual bypaths, right? Like we're not going to use the imprecatory psalms or the lament psalms. And so when i'm feeling sad, i will just pray for joy,. But mindfulness is supposed to keep that from happening through radical acceptance. That's why it sort of works better. A lot of times what a christian needs is to bring in meditation practices which have more close kinship with buddhist mindfulness.

Yes,
Speaker 2
that's exactly what he noticed. And that's why it seems so cennern toive to say it that way. Cause
Speaker 1
i could see a lot of christian prayer practices as being more open to spiritual bypaths, right? Like, well, we're not going to use the imprecatory psalms or the lament psalms. We're just going to ask god for things we want. And so when i'm feeling sad, i will just pray for joy, like you'r you're praying and, and you're doing kind of a normal christian prayer and ignoring this other part of you. But mindfulness its it's almost like poetic that that would be the guy who would coin the term. Because mindfulness is supposed to keep that from happening through radical acceptance, you know, accepting everything about this moment and not trying to change it. That's like the whole idea. That's why it sort of works better. That's why a lot of times what a christian needs is to bring in christian meditation practices, which have more close kinship with buddhist mindfulness. Then they do petitionary prayer, rite or something like that. When you
Speaker 2
you experience some of these states that can happen in a meditation, they do bring about a sense of bliss, oh, yes, a sense of things are as they are. And and that's all that needs to be. That's what john welen was talking about,
Speaker 1
yes wo it's like wanting to go straight to that feeling of peaceful non attachment, but maybe also like a nice dump of saratonan, you know, making you feel like every is good. I mean, i certainly hav, i have had, and continue to have, that type of experience in my own contemplative practice. And there is a temptation to chase that, like i'm chasing the hie from a drug. You know, it's not as easy to get as just taking a drug, which is why there are a lot more people who abuse drugs than abuse meditation. But you can imagine, i mean, i can't imagine someone just going, oh, that is the best feeling ever. Like, i just want to keep having that feeling.
