I remember that Kennedy speech about the finger of suspicion being pointed at him because of his Catholicism. But nonetheless, what I really don't like is politicians who retreat behind this idea that you can have a sort of private religious faith and it doesn't issue in any sort of political action. And I think tonight we're going to come across the line attributed to Queen Elizabeth I when she said she didn't intend to make windows into men's souls. She was prepared to put up with quite a lot of fudging where religion and beliefs about the state or politics coincided - which Winston Churchill then reposted.
