Edison's Struggle to Get the Right Filament
There were hundreds and once Edison had that high level idea of which hundred problems they needed to figure out one by one the way they did it was just kind of ugly experimentation a lot of the time. A whole book could be written about the vast amount of work which mr Edison and his assistants had to perform in order to get the right kind of filament or vacuum. There's an excerpt written in my piece today which dives it exactly into what this effort looked like and it's painful from Edmund Morris for a week after week the two men cut planes and carbonized filaments from every fiber substance they could get hickory holly maple and rosewood splints.
