The Importance of Animal Welfare

I think for many people it might be something of a point of principle that advocating for improvements in the conditions of animal welfare seems to be an implicit condoning of the fact that they're being exploited at all. Do you think there's something undignified about advocating for better conditions of exploited people? I think it really depends on the prospects of getting to no exploitation at all within a foreseeable timeframe.
