Captain Ellen Jack: From New York to Chicago, Kansas to Civil War

This chapter provides a detailed account of the life of Ellen Jack and her husband Charles. It begins with their move to America and settlement in Brooklyn, followed by Charles' enlistment in the Civil War. Upon his return, they have two children who tragically die from Scarlet Fever. Seeking change, they move to Chicago but lose everything in a fire, except for their surviving daughter. They then try their luck at farming in Kansas and have another child before Charles succumbs to his war injuries. Ellen takes on his name and assumes his role.
