The Three Components of Consciousness
A.C. Bhakti Vidanta, who was a prolific swami and writer, wrote about consciousness and reincarnation in his book, Coming Back to Life. He believed that the human consciousness was the highest form of consciousness as of now. And with differing levels of consciousness, we have lower forms, which I call static thinking and and autonomic thinking. Our ancestors are hominid ancestors, I believe, weren't always conscious in the way that we are.
