i agree that the suggestion of historical inevability baked into diamond's theory is truly one its greatest weaknesses. While i do think these criticisms are worth considering, i'm just not entirely convinced. I find the book sloppy, but not malicious. The article f jerrid diamond is actually one of the worst critiques of the book i have come across. It conflates diamond's brand of geographic determinism with nineteenth century social darwinism without much interest in new ants. His editorial is also less about jerryd diamond himself and more about economists like geffrey sax who use some of diamond's ideas as a way of obfusating tough questions about capitalism.
