The Life of a Captain on a Ship
At the bottom of the pecking order, you would have the common pages. They scrubbed decks and washed clothes and cleaned up after meals. Next in line were the apprentices; they were usually in their later teens. The sailors ranged from his late teens up to around 40. Men rarely went to sea after the age of 40. It was a hard and demanding life suitable only for the most able-bodied.
