Socrates and the Sophism of the Greek Aegon
The famous critique of the sophists is that they are teachers of rhetoric. They treated rhetorical skill as like any other skill, not part of some greater moral project to seek the truth. Socrates condemns this as fundamentally immoral. The symposium was a place to bring one's perspective into competition with other viewpoints.
