How Complex Is the World Around You?

The complexity in the world around you is composed of both its own internal entropy and the divergence from our expectations. In language, large written works tend to have a high degree of entropy, but to align with our expectations. If you look at classical music and more contemporary music, we find that they have less entropy, intrinsic entropy,. But they diverge from our expectations markedly. The goal or function of music versus language can be distinct in the sense that language is often used to communicate and to communicate effectively. Whereas music is used to connect interpersonally, it's used for entertainment, it's often used purposefully to surprise.
