The Five Speaks of the Academy
The original Oscar mold was cast in 1928 at the CW Shumway and Sons Foundry in Batavia, Illinois. From 1983 to 2015, about 50 Oscars in a tin alloy with gold-plating were made every year in Chicago by R.S. Owens. The five spokes represent the five original branches of the Academy actors, writers, directors, producers and technicians. Did you know that due to a metal shortage during World War II, the Oscars were made of painted plaster for three years?
