How to Read a Short Story

I recommend to people all the time who say they want to get into the classics. I always say like begin with their short stories. There's a Dostoeski short story that I read, after which I read, it just destroyed me. The death of Ivan Ilyich was- I went on a vacation with my kids to Florida and over two nights at the beach I read them this beautiful meditation on death.
