The mercator projection distorts the size of continents, especially towards the top and bottom poles. So if you want to really understand the earth, you have to look at a globe. And also, if you take a mocator projection and you try to actually use like a ruler to measure distances between points under recator projection, till i see where your airplane flight is going to be.
