The History of Empathy
The term empathy was actually invented by psychologists in Germany a long time ago who were trying to imagine something like virtuality. So the very idea of empathy is part of the history of virtual reality. But unfortunately, when it's not working that way at all because instead you're being optimized for the purpose of whoever's paying for the advertising or whoever is manipulating the system with a bunch of fake people.
