Prussia is a good cautionary tale of what happened to countries who did not reform. Poland had been one of the greatest powers in eastern Europe, but its government was dysfunctional. The Polish state stayed weak and divided while its rivals grew stronger. Some liberal aristocrats thought they could save the country by giving up some of their feudal privileges.
