The Netherlands was in the middle of a revolt against its previous masters, the Spanish. It also brought people who came from a sort of humanist education which was interested in natural history and ideas. Tulips are interesting partly because people hadn't really seen anything like this before. The main thing about them was that they changed and that they came in different colors.
