The Origins of Beat Nick Films

Sam Katzmann was an American film producer and director famous for his ability to pump out low budget features that actually made money. He only directed five films, all of them released in 1937, but he produced 124 films. The genres were all over the place, as you might expect, but they obviously included horror movies. Some historians credit him with the creation of the term beat Nick.
