South Carolina Seceded, and the United States Seized Federal Property

Seven states had already seceded and eight more were teetering on the edge. On inauguration day, only two major forts in the south still flew the united states flag. Fort sumter guarded south carolina's charleston harbor, a vital port for southern trade. The shelling of fort sumter lit a fire in americans on both sides of the mason dixon line. Shots were fired between northern and southern men who would soon take up arms against each other and march into battle.
