Colonial Aspirations and German Identity

This chapter examines the 19th-century mindset of European middle classes towards colonial expansion, drawing parallels to the myth of El Dorado. It also discusses the political challenges faced by Germany in seeking respect and recognition internationally, especially in contrast to the treatment of Japan as a rising non-white power.
