Crisis Proofing the Federal Government for the Next Pandemic
The agency responsible for approving immigration and visitor views applications was just barely averting an existential crisis of its own. Despite our best efforts, we have been forced to issue furlough notices to nearly 70 % of our employees. Without funding from congress, we will have no choice but to sen with large scale furloughs on august thirtieth. But in late august, the agency suddenly changed its tune. It had found enough money and made enough cuts to stay afloat. That said, the episode and the continued delays to basic functioning at the agency raise serious questions about what happened and whether the crisis has really passed.
