Antony's Problem With Fundamental Axioms

In russell's first encounter with geometry, he looks at these fundamental axioms that are taken as the starting points for geometry. But how do we know that those axioms are true? He then has the same experience when he goes on to look at arithmetic. The arithmetic of his time starts from thee so called piano axioms. So they yaure supposed to take as basic things like, for any natural number x, x plus one is also a natural number.
