What's the Difference Between a Peasant and an Indigenous Subsistence Farmer?

A peasant is a lot like an indigenous subsistence farmer, but there are two main things that separate them. The difference is that the peasant community has been conquered by a more powerful force and then they get exploited by that force. And these conquering powers usually organize themselves into states in order to maintain their relations of exploitation and domination over the peasants. That's exactly why most states came to existence in the first place.
