The only reason there's a story at all is because speedrunning games, time trial games are like exhausting. And so the story is meant to be kind of a pacing tool and a reward for players. So it was solving a specific problem for us. But I mean, I'm going to give credit to AVB who is one of the writers on this. She very early on when we were working on this gave me a tip: pick a structure, a rigid structure for how you're going to tell the story and never change it.
