The ancient jewish example does not blunt a classic observation by isaiah berlin with which i would like to end. Berlin acutely observed how nineteenth century thinkers, including marks, were blind to the persistent strength of nationalism around them. They even assumed that it was a passing response which would simply disappear. In antiquity, there was no such technological revolution and no elite move to proto globalization. But berlin's words about the reaction to them in nineteenth century europe make it very much easier for us to understand the latest modern flare up breaksit.
