Prior to the mid 20th century, almost anyone with the proper educational credentials could get into Harvard. Post-war restrictions sharply cut the acceptance rate down to about a third of applicants. This is set off an intense competition where getting into Harvard is a status symbol. Some universities like Tsinghua also have extremely low acceptance rates.
