The Art of Deception
Gibbons was praised for the art of deception. His carving is not just about recreating a piece of fruit or a flower. But it's actually looking or thinking about the viewer and where they're standing, so that the perspective's right an there is deception going on. When i look at these works, i do feel a bit like realityis rippling,. because they are so like fruit and leaves and peapods, but they're all so very clearly wooden as well. And i wonder what they, what did they stir in the minds of the people who looked upon en when they were fresh?
