Music and Social Bonding

Music seems to have a social bonding function, says Ian Campbell. He looked at what was going on when we speak to each other in an affiliative relationship. When the participants were getting along well, their speech patterns were recognizably musical - even though most of us who aren't studying sounds and rhythms probably wouldn't hear it. And something fascinating happened when people didn't agree with each other. It's fascinating to think that without knowing it, we may well be using music to signify that.
